Mission Statement

The Chief Operations Officer (COO) drives operational excellence and strategic growth, leading a high-performing team to deliver exceptional results while fostering a culture of integrity aligned with Groff's core values. This role focuses on optimizing processes and systems to ensure high-quality project execution, exceeding client expectations, and meeting financial targets. The COO collaborates with the Chief Vision Officer (CVO) to translate innovative ideas into actionable strategies, ensuring clear communication, efficient operations, and unified direction across the organization. The ultimate goal is to drive internal excellence and external growth, maintaining a competitive edge in the landscape design and build industry.

 
 

Daily Responsibilities
1. Second-in-Command to Chief Vision Officer
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the CVO and the rest of the organization.
  • Make high-level decisions in the CVO's absence.
  • Provide regular updates and insights to leadership regarding company performance and challenges.
2. Strategic Planning & Vision
  • Develop and implement strategic and operational plans.
  • Identify and assess risks, issues, and opportunities.
  • Align operations with company goals and business expansion objectives.
3. Cross-Department Leadership
  • Oversee all departments to ensure smooth operations.
  • Foster collaboration and communication between teams.
  • Resolve inter-departmental conflicts and optimize resource allocation.
  • Ensure the right personnel are in the right positions.
4. Operations Oversight
  • Lead, manage, and hold accountable all operations personnel.
  • Conduct weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual meetings.
  • Define goals for efficiency, crew productivity, and resource optimization.
5. Financial Management
  • Work closely with the finance department to align operational strategies with financial goals.
  • Monitor and optimize budgets for departments and projects.
6. Client Experience
  • Maintain high-quality project standards, ensuring on-time and within-budget completion.
  • Oversee client feedback systems and customer satisfaction metrics.
7. Training
  • Lead the development and execution of all training programs for operations and installation personnel.
  • Implement leadership training initiatives.
8. LEAN Principles & Waste Management
  • Implement LEAN management practices to reduce waste and maximize efficiency.
  • Optimize labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor usage.
  • Identify bottlenecks in scheduling, dispatch, and field operations.
9. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Update and develop SOPs for core workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with established procedures across all departments.
10. Data & Metrics
  • Utilize job data for improved estimating and labor rate accuracy.
  • Monitor crew productivity, job completion times, and material usage.
  • Ensure all installation and operations team members understand labor rates.
11. Installation Schedule Management
  • Collaborate with operations and sales teams for accurate scheduling.
  • Streamline communication across departments.
12. Equipment Management
  • Oversee equipment inventory and purchasing.
  • Develop and maintain efficient maintenance systems for field teams.
13. Continued Education
  • Attend webinars, seminars, and industry conferences.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and best practices.
14. Culture Driver
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and alignment with Groff's core values.
  • Promote a positive work environment that encourages innovation and teamwork.
  • Host team-building activities and recognition events during peak seasons.

  • LEAN, Toyota Way, or waste-reduction experience preferred.

  • Client experience/service training knowledge.
  • Construction experience in masonry, hardscape, or high-end residential landscape installation preferred but not required.

Working Conditions & Hour Expectations
  • This position is performed in the office, in the field, and on job sites.
  • The goal is to maximize office efficiency while minimizing unnecessary travel time.
  • Expect 10-12-hour workdays during peak seasons.
